It's been nearly four years since I totally changed up my skincare regimen and started down my essential oils path. I remember mulling over the oil cleansing method for months before taking the plunge. The thought of it seemed so crazy -- you want to the purposefully put oils on my face. Say what?!
In reality, it's one of the best decisions that I've made for my skin.
My love for oils runs so deep at this point that I don't use any other moisturizing products on my face besides oils (grapeseed oil is my favorite). Every time I've bought a fancy moisturizer and thought about giving it a try, my skin reacts in a very mean, no good way. It just loves my oil cleansing method routine that much.
How I got started with the oil cleansing method
Like many of you that find this article, I was simply Googling things are essential oils, holistic beauty tips and whole living. I stumbled upon this epic post by Crunchy Betty and was immediately fascinated. She does a great job (so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel) of explaining the role of carrier oils and castor oil.
The firs thing I did was decide which types of oils would be best for me with the castor oil. I ended up buying avocado and almond initially, although I also added jojoba and grapeseed to the mix, too.
What I learned along the way about the oil cleansing method
One of the most valuable things I learned is just how important it is to experiment with the proportions of oils that worked best for me. And, here's the key: it changes by season and my environment. In the summers, I always had to add more castor oil to help my skin feel clean. In the winters, I always had to add more carrier oils to add extra moisture to my dry skin. It's really important to pay attention to how your skin feels and adjust your personal oil cleansing method routine to fit that. Everything from the food you eat to how much water you drink or how much exercise you get can play a part in the balance you need for your oil.
Why I don't do the oil cleansing method anymore
Here's the thing: the oil cleansing method worked awesome for me during the 3.5 years we were in Italy. Seriously, best skin of my life. When we got back to the U.S. my skin went totally crazy with all the HVAC going on -- blasting heat and AC depending on the time of year. After the years in Italy with fairly limited use of both, my skin didn't know how to react. And, therefore, it went crazy.
I tried and tried to adjust my oil balance, but simply couldn't get it right. Without the time to really give to the process (and wanting to have non-broken-out skin for my professional life), I switched to a Clairsonic brush. I still, however, use grapeseed as my only moisturizer.
At some point in the next year I plan to give the oil cleansing method another go. That being said, I feel fortunate to have had the four awesome skincare years that I did using the oils. Essential oils are a huge part of my life and their use in the oil cleansing method is just one way I utilize them.
