As some of you know, my little gal Livia (now a toddler with boundless energy) was a cloth diaper baby. While I would love to claim that we did it for health reasons, the fact of the matters is that it was a financial and availability-based decision. You can read all about our adventure here.
One of the first questions that I asked myself after deciding on diapers was, “How do I make homemade diaper wipe solution?” Because, if you are going to use the eco-friendly diapers, you might as well go an eco-friendly route on the wipes, too!
I did a lot of research and ultimately decided on this simple recipe:
1 tablespoon almond oil
1 tablespoon Dr. Bronner's Baby-Mild Liquid Castile Soap
2 drops tea tree oil
1 drop lavender oil
1 cup water
I typically made the recipe in just under double batches. Because I used condiment bottle squirters (yup, these), the liquid they held was just under a double batch of the recipe above.
What I love about homemade diaper wipe solutions is that you can adjust the recipe as needed. If I noticed Livy’s skin getting dry, I’d add more almond oil. If I saw even a hint of rash (which was rare), I would add in an extra drop of tea tree.
You can find lots of homemade diaper wipe solution “recipes” online, but what I loved about the one above was how darn simple it is! It was easy to keep those ingredients in stock and you need so little of each per batch. It took 4 months for us to work through the oils and slightly longer with the castille soap.
For the wipes themselves, my mom went to a fabric store and bought remnant flannel fabric. She cut them into squares and poof! Baby wipes. One tip I would offer is to wash them a few times before you use them because you want some of the worn/texture that comes with washing that fabric for absorbency purposes.
